Abstract

We present a study on the operations of addition and subtraction, conducted with students with Down syndrome. We interviewed a group of students with Down syndrome while solving basic additive problems and addition and subtraction operations. Our aim was to analyze their knowledge about the meaning of these operations, the strategies and procedures that they apply, and the relationship between their difficulties and their cognitive characteristics. The results show that students with Down syndrome use the same levels of strategies and procedures than students without any disability, though just one subject operated on the most abstract level. The use of fingers or concrete representations (balls) was the main strategy used for performing operations.
