Abstract
We define the notion of �conceptual amphisbene� as a very special kind of philosophical contrast in which each term of the distinction suggests an opposed term that does not coincides with what we can find on the other side. We use that notion to analyze four distinctions closely connected to technology: 1) genuine realities/mere simulations, 2) real existence/virtual existence, 3) natural/artificial and 4) intrinsic value/instrumental value. One of the main conclusions of our analysis will be a precise distinction among simulation, virtual reality and the artificial.
