Abstract

Objective: To assess the clinical usefulness of polymerase chain reaction (PCR), based on literature and on our experience, for etiologic diagnosis of infectious uveitis and idiopatic uveitis. Methods: Systematic review of the available medical literature. Results: Molecular techniques are used to confirm the diagnosis of uveitis by means of the presence of genetic material of the organism (RNA or DNA amplified by PCR). Conclusions: In the last years, several infectious agents have been implicated in the etiology of uveitis. Apart from the cases of endogenous and postsurgical endophthalmitis, the detection of pathogenes is increasing. PCR is a sensitive and specific technique that can confirm the diagnosis in less than 24 hours and start the appropriate treatment.
