Abstract
This paper is a critical overview of the main contributions concerning the extension of the variable analysis to syntax. I state its study from a sociolinguistic perspective analyzing the most problematic questions like the kind of variable and variants, the identity of them and their social correlations. Each of these questions is observed from a theoretical and historical point of view, stating current issues and its present time status.
