Abstract

The «diaries» of the merchants are a direct source of documentation for the análisis of the economic activity of the major trading companies in the principal European cities, and also of their relation with the Canaries at the beginninf of the CXVI. The "Tagebuch" of Lucas Rem is an example of this kind of sources. He was a cultivated person, the commercial agent for the Welser company, who in one of his journeys, in 1509, visited La Palma or "verfluoch land" by his own definition. His diary allows us to analyze the commercial interests of the major companies in the islands, and how these fitted into the pattern of large scale commerce.
