Abstract

Malnutrition in alcoholics: relevance of socioeconomic factors and inflammatory response. Background: The importance of adequate nutritional status is essential to maintain an optimal health status. It also plays a key role in survival. An impaired nutritional status is common in the alcoholic patient. The recent observations that proinflammatory cytokines may persist elevated in these patients for a long time adds a new component to the complex pathogenesis of malnutrition among them. Objective: To review the current knowledge related to malnutrition in alcoholic patients, its pathogenesis and its prognostic significance. Conclusions: The evaluation of the nutritional status of alcoholic patients is essential because it is a determinant of prognosis and in the development of complications. It is possible that alcoholism especially if there is major liver involvement, behaves as an inflammatory disease. The inflammatory effect of "contrainsular" cytokines may contribute to alter the nutritional status.
