Resumen

Action in the field of family violence and gender requires diagnostics based on the different variables that make up the complexity of the phenomenon. In addition, good practice requires an active listening to what women tell about her life experience. In this article, we present the results of a study that describes the experiences of a group of women before and after leaving a violent relationship. Our goal was to learn about the process followed by these women victims of partner violence, before and after breaking the relationship; how they perceived the risk throughout the process, as well as the obstacles and the social support received. The study includes fifteen women who had suffered partner violence. The instruments used were a semi-structured interview, a scale for measuring the type and seriousness of the violence suffered, and a questionnaire to collect demographic data. The selection of participants was carried out through various social-protection community and specialized care services to women victims of family and gender violence. The results are divided into two general sections: the period of cohabitation with the aggressor and the situation following the breakdown of the relationship. The relevant conclusions for social intervention with women who have suffered partner violence include, among others, the importance of risk perception, of the difficulties and coping skills and the social support available, as well as of economic autonomy.
