Abstract

The aim of this work is to ascertain the level of discrepancy that exists between the preuniversity Mathematics and the one given in the first course of the Economics and Business degrees. The proposed methodology is based on the analysis of data series from three different sources of quantitative and qualitative information. Particularly, a test of knowledge was carried out by a number of students, some of them on their second course of Bachillerato and others at the beginning of the mentioned degrees. Additionally, some teachers of Bachillerato were asked about their perceptions of mathematics education and an opinion survey was conducted among a group of undergraduates during their second semester at university. In short, this work combines knowledge and perceptions to achieve a triple vision of reality. The preliminary analysis made with a first data sample, together with the marks obtained by the undergraduates in Mathematics I of the Economics and Business degrees, highlight the above mentioned level of discrepancy and allow to question the mathematical contents given in Bachillerato and in the degrees. Furthermore, the approach clearly points to encourage an effective coordination between both educational levels.
