Resumo

The rise of the Ottoman Empire and the progressive appearance within of independent states throughout the nineteenth century, caused the inevitable confluence of European Romantic spirit, the driving force of revolutions in Europe and America, and the importance of the national identity, rooted in traditional patriarchal role models. Inside of this tough sociopolitical and ideological remapping, some female discourses arise that, despite of the limited maneuverability, place women at the epicenter of change and make a strategy of feminist struggle. We present two female discourses, one from the Greek activist Kalirroe Paren (1861-1940) and one from the Lebanese-Palestinian Mayy Ziyada (1866-1941), based in Egypt, both based on the intellectual and literary activity of its creators, on the first Greek and Arabic strong feminist ideologies, and on the political capacity for change of women in a hostile environment.
