Resumo

Nitrate is considered as one of the main chemical contaminants of water. At European level, the importance of this pollutant is reflected in the existence of a specific regulation (91/676/EC), for its control and abatement. e main source of nitrate pollution is the excessive application of nitrogen fertilizers to agricultural soils, which eventually accumulate in underground water bodies. is is the case of the Canary Islands, where many aquifers, most of them coastal, hold high concentrations of nitrate and can not be used for direct municipal supply. is paper summarizes and assesses the different technologies, applied both internationally and in the Canary Islands, for the removal of nitrate in terms of efficiency, cost and ease of operation, and proposes further research aimed at developing new technologies.
