Resumen

This experiment was conducted at theAlfredo Volio Mata Dairy Cattle Experiment Station in CostaRica, at an altitude of 1542 masl, with an average annualrainfall of 2050 mm, temperature of 19.5°C and a relativehumidity of 84%. A ramie plantation was split into fourblocks, with a distance of 70 cm between rows and 50 cmbetween plants. Each block was divided into four plots givenconsecutive pruning treatments every 42nd , 56th, 70th and84th day. The annual yield of bio-mass of the whole ramiebush (stems and leaves) was highly influenced (P=0.01) bythe cutting frequency. The stem production and the wholeplant had a non-linear response when the cutting intervalincreased between the 42nd to 84th day. The leaf:stem ratioshowed a decrease as the pruning interval increased. Theability of the plants to re-grow was observed however, insubsequent prunings there was a low persistence onproduction.
