Abstract
The sustainable management ofwater resources has special concem in insular environments. The Canary Islands have groundwater as traditional water supply, but recen ti y, the over-exploitation of aquifers has led to the use of altemative water resources, being water reuse one ofthem. Severa! water reuse schemes have been put into operation in the islands affected by water shortages in the last two decades. Reuse applications are landscape (parks and gardens and golf courses), and crop irrigation. However, the promotion of water reuse faces sorne handicaps, such as the low development of the wastewater collection and treatment systems in sorne islands, the frequent poor agronomic quality of the reclaimed wastewater for agricultura! purposes, and the absence of legislation standards on water reuse.
