Abstract

The pre-university teachers support a speech different of the students by their ethnicity, marked by nearness or remoteness to the school culture and therefore to the model students - though it is of a very distant culture-. Teachers have a favourable position of Asians and unfavourable of Africans and Latin Americans, both from masculine and feminine students. This position could have an effect on students' academic outcomes. Far from being aware of the potential impact of their expectations, the teachers hold their discourse sometimes under safeguard clauses attempting to legitimize the differences and other times they have an unfair speech labelling by the ethnicity of students, but they do not justify. Either way little can be done to achieve equal opportunities for ethnic groups when making a discriminative approach.
