Abstract

he late arrival of M odernism in Galicia with respect to other countries of Central Europe does not display in the Galici an cities until 1905, being Jesú s Lopez de Rego Labarta, with his architecture in Santiago de Compostela, pioneer in the use of this new style. The modernist Pazo finca do Espiño is, undoubtedly, one of his works unique and peculiar, being, probably, the only modernist interpretation of the Galician Pazo. This building, with clear influence Viennese and historicist, moves constantly between modernity and tradition, including a new and rich decorative repertoire, but keeping the traditional spatial distributions. Likewise, emphasizes the use of cement as new material in f acades, becoming symbol of the modernist due to the ornamental liberty offering. The building is currently in a s tate of ruin and abandonment, only preserved part of the exterior walls and a huge mountain of rubble inside. In this way, studying the multipl e possibilities offered, arises a rehabilitation project, which aims to recover it for use as a cultural center, through the use of a contemporary language that complete and enhances the ruins arrived to our days
