Efectividad de una intervención educativa en el conocimiento de la población escolar sobre reanimación cardiopulmonar básica

Abstract

Objective: to evaluate the efficacy of an educative intervention program on the improvement of the level of information and theoretical and practical knowledge required for basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) among a student population from Compulsory Secondary Education. Method: a quasi-experimental before-and-after study was designed. The study was conducted at a School in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands. The population of the study were all the students from 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of Compulsory Secondary Education, and 1st year of High School. The study was developed in three stages: during the first stage, students had to complete a questionnaire on theoretical-practical knowledge of CPR; in the second stage, a theoretical-practical course on CPR was conducted. After a 10-day period, the third stage consisted in re-assessing the level of knowledge acquired after the intervention, through the same questionnaire previously used. Results: for the assessment previous to the intervention, 182 questionnaires were completed, while 171 were completed for post-intervention assessment. There were differences superior to 20% in the rate of correct answers to all questions after the intervention, and all differences were statistically significant. Conclusions: through this Educative Intervention Program on basic CPR, the school population has been brought closer, in an educational and practical way, to the protocol of action implemented by the American Heart Association and the European Resuscitation Council in their Chain of Survival, and it has been possible to provide those tools necessary for an adequate action in case of witnessing a cardiac arrest.
