Abstract
Using a high-volume sampler fitted with a cascade impactor, aerosol samples were collected in an area of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria subject to heavy motor traffic. The quantity of particles collected (over 24-hour periods), distributed across six size fractions, enabled the detection and quantification, according to these sizes, of 14 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The median mass diameter ranged from 0.86 to 1.82 μm for the particulate aerosol and from 0.38 to 1.31 μm for the individual hydrocarbons. Two types of size distributions were found: bimodal, with modes in the intervals 0.08–0.3 μm and 3.8–7.4 μm for the total particulate matter and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with three benzene rings: fluorene, phenanthrene, and anthracene, as well as for fluoranthene; and unimodal (0.08–0.3 μm) for the total PAHs and the remaining hydrocarbons.
