Abstract

Possible economic advantages of growing "pasto elefante" as a forage crop in Tenerife are discussed . The Islands climatic characteristics are similar to those in subtropical áreas where this grass is usually cultivated. Its high yield, protein content, good palatability and possible use as fresh pasture and as silage, make this grass an excellent choice for animal feeding. Because of its fast growth and easy to mow and graze "pasto Elefante" might be a good alternative for animal feeding in the small farms of Tenerife. Its use might alleviate the Island's dependence in foreign feeds for cattle production.
