Résumé

Las Cañadas del Teide was considered for centuries as a marginal territory dedicated to the traditional goat shepherding. That reality was modified at the end of the 19th century when the new economic prospects of the region (mining and tourism growth) arose ownership and border disputes between the island municipalities. Likewise due to the clandestine overexploitation, the growing deterioration of communal lands caused tensions and conflicts that ended in a strong repression from the decade of the 1920s against the traditional shepherding and charcoal production. After severe political eradication of the traditional practices during the post civil war period, the nationalization process encouraged by Franco´s dictatorship extinguished the communal uses of the mountains of Tenerife. The creation of Las Cañadas del Teide National Park in 1954 ended this process.
