Laburpena

The Canary Islands Parliament is the regional chamber of the Canary Islands since 1983 began to be held regional elections. The electoral system of access to the regional assembly saves several peculiarities. The size of the districts and electoral barriers, considered high. Likewise, each island is an electoral district with a fixed allocation of seats without any proportional distribution. For the preparation of electoral campaigns, each of these aspects influence the management of the political groups that operates in the islands. In this paper, the importance of the electoral system of the Canary Islands Parliament to configure electoral campaign in the islands is reviewed. We start from the idea expressed by Garcia Rojas (1997) which indicates that the canary policy has been insularised due to the evolution of political parties in the Canaries, and the prevalence of the insular area in the autonomy. For it, we explain the peculiarities of the canary political parties system as well as historical and political issues that affect the electoral development
