Noticias sobre una parodia épica de Miguel Cabralla Perenqueneida

Résumé

The figure of the secularized clergyman Miguel Cabral de Noroña (c. 1769-1820) has been researched due to the great interest that his life’s career awakens, as well as his writings against colonization and in favour of freemasonry. Some scattered poems were also known, and can nowadays be found in several manuscripts’ collections. Nevertheless, his autorship of Perenqueneida, a mock epic poem about the love between a chorister and a nun in a closed order in Icod de los Vinos, remained unknown. This poem was written in an epic parody genre, which was widely used in the Golden Age and 18th century in Spain and Italy, with remarkable examples in 1700’ literature from Canary Islands. Some of the stanzas in the poem, quoted at the end of this essay, have been preserved thanks to a copy made by José Agustín Álvarez Rixo, who, whith his selection and brief comments, highlighted the moralizing values of the poem over the more humorist side of it
