Abstract

This article examines a work entitled "Espejo de Chirurgia", written in 1631 by the surgeon Antonio de Viana, born in La Laguna (Tenerife‐Islas Canarias) in 1578. Even though the treatise was produced in the first half of the 17th century, Viana’s medical training helps explain why its characteristics are typical of Renaissance medical knowledge. The treatise is mainly theoretical and is essentially based on the principle of authority, especially in the works of Galen, and its most striking feature is the abundance of ancient, medieval and modern sources.
