Abstract

Banana weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus) is currently the most important pest in this crop in Canary Islands, causing significant losses for the sector. The most common treatments for its control are adult trapping, and the use of chlorpyrifos (next to its prohibition). Therefore, the only available chemical treatments to control the weevil are the nematides with secondary insecticidal action. In the present study, the action of an unauthorized nematicide in banana crop was evaluated to assess its efectiveness (different doses) and to compare it with authorized products, looking for the alternation of active substances to avoid the appearance of resistance. The products used in these experiments are Nemathorin 10 G (Fosthiazate) and Vydate (Oxamyl), giving the same results in terms of pest reduction. In the case of plant growth; such as, stem height and circumference, Nemathorin 10 G obtained the best results. In addition, this chemical significantly increased bunch size and weight, as well as the final yield of the crop.
