Objective: to analyze the need perceived by Pre-school, Primary and Secondary School teachers for Health Education, as well as for implementing the role of the school nurse. Method: a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with the teachers (n= 75) from the Valle de Guerra (San Cristóbal de La Laguna-Tenerife) public schools during 2017. Data collection: a self-administered questionnaire, validated and adapted (8,19). Results: answers were collected from 50 subjects. The health problems and accidents most frequently found by teachers were: glycemic alterations in diabetic students (17%), falls (13.8%), sprains (13.8%), wounds (10.6%), epileptic seizures (9.6%) and fractures (7.5%). Out of the participants, 70% claimed that they could identify and solve a hypo/hyperglycemia episode “sometimes” or “seldom”; 82% of the teachers stated the need for implementing healthcare education programs, and 62% declared that the role of the school nurse was necessary “always / almost always” in schools: their main activity, placed in the first position, should be “To train students, parents and school staff on healthy habits” (15%). Conclusions: the great majority of teachers stated the need for further training on health matters. The school nurse was valued as a role of reference for health in education settings, and responsible for promoting the acquirement of knowledge on healthy life habits, in order to encourage the development of young people with healthy lifestyles that would continue through adulthood.
