Abstract
Eduard Toda i Güell is regarded by the Spanish egyptologists as the most notable of their predecessors. He was vice consul in Cairo for about two years. During this time, he gathered the most responsible for the removal of the funerary equipment from the tomb of Sennedjem (TT 1); this intervention has been considered _with a certain inaccuracy_ as the beginning of the Spanish Archaeology in Egypt. However, it seems taken for granted, uncritically, that he travelled to the country of the Nile with antiquarian interest, attended courses in Egyptology in Cairo, started his collection and visited regularly archaeological sites since the moment of his arrival. In recent years, several documents generated by him during those two years (travel diary, newspapers articles, drafts, records of objects of the collection, letters and photographs) have been published. Also letters and diaries produced by persons who met him in Egypt or immediately after his return to Spain. This article analyses the information provided by these new sources, as well as their reliability and limitations. Moreover, as accurate record of Toda's activities during his stay in Egypt has been established using these evidences,. These sources provide some insights into the beginning of his interest in Egyptian antiquities, the formation of his collections (objects, squeezes, photographs) and the dates and aims of his visits to archaeological sites.
