Profit efficiency and its determinants in small and medium-sized enterprises in Spain

Resumen

Este trabajo estima la eficiencia de beneficios y sus determinantes en las pequeñas y medianas empresas manufactureras en España. Se utilizó la metodología de frontera estocástica y el modelo propuesto por Battese y Coelli (1995) para determinar el impacto de las diferencias tecnológicas y ambientales entre estas empresas en su eficiencia. Los resultados indican que la rentabilidad media de las pymes alimentarias es del 49,37%. Los resultados también revelan que el tamaño de la empresa, la orientación a las exportaciones, la asistencia gubernamental y la productividad laboral están todos positivamente relacionados con la eficiencia de las PYMES alimentarias; la edad, sin embargo, está relacionada negativamente. Finalmente, se discuten las implicaciones estratégicas de estos hallazgos.
