Résumé

Subglottic stenosis is a partial or total narrowing of the subglottis, on the cricoid cartilage. It can be congenital or adquired due to multiple causes. Most of the times this stenosis is secondary to prolonged tracheal intubation. It produces an obstruction of the upper airway that presents with stridor, dyspnea and signs of respiratory distress. The therapeutic decision must be individualized, and take into account not only the type, degree and duration of the stenosis, but factors such as age, associated malformations and nutritional status. There is no single method applicable to all cases. ES requires a quick diagnosis because it can compromise the patient’s life. It should be suspected in children with post-intubation stridor, dysphonia or impossibility of extubation.
