Abstract

Issuing a censo (which has some similarity to a mortgage but is attached permanently to a property so that the owner of the property has to pay an annual sum in perpetutity) on the sugar mill of Argual and on other properties of Miguel Monteverde in 1560, in favour of his brother Juan Monteverde, was really a loan operation, which shows that there was a need for liquidity among certain major landowners, as well as the socioeconomic dynamism of most of the ruling officials of the Cabildo of La Palma
