Abstract

The coast of the El Golfo Valley and the coasts of the lava platforms of Punta de la Dehesa-El Verodal and of the Montaña of Orchilla-Montaña de Las Calcosas, on the El Hierro Island (Canary Islands), are characterized by the existence of numerous headland or "puntas", caves, sea arches and small sea stacks. In these areas, the coast is represented by basaltic lava flows from the last eruptions related to the activity of the volcanic ridges of the Island that present a peculiar and marked double columnar joint. The progressive erosive action of the waves on these flows with its peculiar columnar joints leads to the sequential generation of caves, sea arcs parallel to the coastline, headland or "puntas", sea arcs perpenticular to the coastline and sea stacks, in a clear process of coastal regression.
