Résumé

The legal framework for the preservation of palaeontological sites in Canary Islands is still poorly developed. The palaeontological interest of fossil sites has been established and defined on the basis of three groups of criteria: scientific, socio-cultural and socio-economic. Application of such criteria should be done taking into account the geological and geographical traits ofeach island. A special attention has been drawn on such scientific criteria as fossil content (abundace) and type of outcrop in every island. Using these evaluation criteria the importance of preserving even a single outcrop by island is emphasized.
