Abstract

The conquest of the Canary Islands, at the end of the Middle Ages and its subsequent colonization, implied the imposition of a new material and cultural reality on a territory occupied, exploited and conceived under the logic of Aboriginal society. The interest of the study of the soundscapes of the island after the conquest lies in that it allows apprehending diverse planes of this reality: On the one hand, the soundscape of the pre-existing populations, hardly perceptible by the sources available but in any case a cultural element of first order to take into account; the new sonority provided by the conquistadors, and the process of cultural construction of the new environment. In order to carry out this analysis, we propose an approach based on the available sources, both documentary and literary, trying to rescue the signs that allow us to understand the sound environment in which the new society of early times developed.
