Purpose: To assess the effect of the use of auditory signals previous to the appearance of the light stimulus in the execution of the Tendency Oriented Perimetry (TOP) test. Methods: 35 healthy volunteers (35 eyes) with no previous perimetric experience were examined on two consecutive occasions on the Octopus perimeter with the TOP program. On one of the two occasions the instrument¿s built-in audio cue was activated. In half of the cases the order of the two test was reversed. Results: There was a significant increase in the number of false positives in the TOP explorations with audio cueing as opposed to those carried out without it. No significant differences were found with respect to the number of false negatives. Conclusions: The use of audio cueing to raise the attention span when carrying out visual field test leads to a greater number of false positives and produces a false improvement in sensitivity levels.
