Abstract

In recent years, global movements are gaining strength and local community participation. The involvement of the community for social welfare and progress of society can succeed if they provide the necessary means to do so. On the occasion of World Health Day, we reflect on key aspects of socio-educational as education and health promotion and the importance of community involvement. The latter develops the ability of people to work collaboratively with others, to identify priorities and to get things done and projects are carried out. Studies by economists, sociologists and psychologists, among others, have shown that people who participate in decision making are happier than those who simply accept or implement decisions of others, because they feel responsible for improving quality of life. Different institutions and initiatives are working on facilitating community participation from education to health to achieve a more complete educational intervention, especially in Latin America and the Caribbean, where popular education was initiated and developed multiple socio-cultural experiences that ultimately work for a particular model of social change and transformation.
