Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to highlight the influence of Cèlestin Freinet's pedagogy on primary schools in the Canary Islands during most of the 20th century. Although it is known that there was a first moment during the Second Republic in which the reception was limited and centred on certain teachers, the same did not happen during the second half of the 1970s, when their presence was evident through school correspondence, free text, the publication of school magazines, cooperativism, autonomous and creative work, active participation by students, visits and coexistence of minors in other schools, etc. We can therefore state that the «Movimiento Cooperativo de Escuela Popular» of the Canary Islands gave an impulse during the political transition to pedagogical practices at the service of school and social democratisation.
