Abstract

Although the Italian sculptor Miguel Naccherino is considered the introducer of the iconographic prototype of the naked Child Jesus in Castilla, in fact was Gerónimo Hernández the true creator of this kind of sacred image when, between 1572 and 1582, the Sevillian Brotherhood of Dulce Nombre commissioned to him to sculpt one for its chapel. However, its was Martínez Montañés who really gave to this peculiar iconography of Christ its final formal appearance with the copy he made in 1606, copy that was afterwards covered many times by Juan de Mesa, being the models of the latter those that will execute disciples and followers in Andalucía, Canarias and / or Hispanoamérica with slight variations.
