Abstract

This article focuses on four of the theoretical concepts proposed by Homi K. Bhabha, given their effective applicability in the analysis of colonial narratives. These concepts —stereotype, ambivalence, third space and mimicry— complement and complete the postulates made by Edward W. Said regarding colonial discourse, mainly in relation to those scenarios where hybrid identities and subversions to colonial authority arise. The methodological applicability of these terms is considered in a selection of sources within Spanish colonial narratives dealing with Moroccan themes, as a case study; the article ultimately argues that the results can be extrapolated to any other literary area with analogous characteristics.
