Abstract

The role of images in the development of science is historically recognised. Currently, the scope of scientific illustration is growing and is adding new functions to its usual descriptive tasks. Archaeological illustration is without doubt a discipline which provides one of the best examples of this. In archaeology, drawing fulfils multiple functions, in the vast majority of research stages, and has become established as an indispensable methodological tool. The repeated confrontation of archaeologists with the task of drawing, a skill for which they may feel a greater or lesser affinity, has led them to try to rationalise its practice. With the aim of speeding up this part of their work, some authors have designed drawing machines as alternative representation procedures. Careful study of these devices and their characteristics reveals the complex nature of archaeological illustration as well as exposing scientists’ assessments of them.
