Abstract

Purpose: Study of diabetic population in Hierro Island, valuing the state or prevalence of their retinopathy. Methods: we studied diabetic population of Hierro Island during two days of June of 1999. Two hundred eigth subjects who had treatment well with diet, oral hypoglycemic agents or Insulin. We picked up information about sex, age, family antecedents, type of diabetes, diabetic duration, type of treatment of it, blood glucose control and risk factors. The opacity or not of the cristalline lens, ocular pressure and state of their retinopathy was valued in the ophthalmologic examinations. Results: 98% they were diabetics type 2 and 1,9% diabetics type 1. The retinopathy was absentee in a 78,4%, being background in a 14,2%, moderate in a 4,9%, severe in a 0,98% and proliferative in a 0,94%.
