Abstract

Among all the imaginary insular contexts that shape Medieval geographical conception, the Fortunate Islands are one of the closest to the realm of myth and legend, as a result of a long journey that begins in Classical tradition. In this paper, we will analyze the persistence of this tradition in the representation of the Fortunate Islands in portolan charts from the Mediterranean 14th century context; we will try to verify how the new knowledge trend that emerges in Europe coexists with the influence of Antique and Medieval tradition concerning the representation of Western limits of the world generally, and the allusion to that archipelago in particular.
