Abstract

Le Canarien is perhaps the most important text of those who form the development of the History of the Canary Islands, since it is the first work that addresses the conquest of the archipelago by Jean de Béthencourt and Gadifer de la Salle in 1402. It is a fundamental chronicle for the understanding of the contact between Europeans and natives in the context of 15th century’s atlantic opening. In this article we will study this cultural contact by analysing its iconographic representation, taking into account the miniatures that show specifically these episodes of contact, being part of the latest of the two surviving manuscripts of Le Canarien, currently held in Rouen’s Municipal Library (Ms. mm 129).
