Abstract

Forms of address are one of the most interesting and widely studied topics in sociolinguistics and related disciplines. These have also been studied extensively from a diachronic point of view. The relevance of forms of address lies in their relationship with social structure and the norms and behavioural patterns that this structure imposes. In this sense, this paper aims to analyse the use of both nominal and pronominal forms of address in the Canary Islands, especially in the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. With that purpose in mind, this paper examines La Lapa(1908), a realist novel by ÁngelGuerra that tries to accurately depict the linguistic uses of that time and that portrays a wide group of social relationships, both in terms of power and solidarity.
