Abstract

The Basal Complex of La Gomera (Canary Islands) constitutes the exposed residue of the seamount stage of growth, including the plutons and dike swarm associated with it and with the distinct stages of subaerial growth of the island. The structure of the Basal Complex is largely unknown, albeit some large normal faults have been described, as well as several large slide surfaces due to the instability of the successive volcanic edifices. The exposure of some folds with metric to decametric wavelengths is a well-known feature, although no systematic structural study of these structures has been performed up to now. This work presents the results of a structural analysis of these folds, showing their relationships with detachment surfaces. Fault-propagation, fault-bending and detachment folds have been recognized. These structures are geometrically similar to those produced in relation to thrust faults. However, in this case the folds are associated with normal faults. Similar structures have been observed in ophiolites, affecting the sheeted-dike complex, supposedly as a consequence of the spreading of the oceanic crust.
