Abstract
Ἄρθρον ‘article’ is used as a grammatical term from the 4th century BC. Its first testimony is, probably, in the rhetorician Anaximenes of Lampsacus, which is followed by the famous Aristotle; for these authors, ἄρθρον is certain indexicals particles. The tradition continues with the stoics Chrysippus of Soli and Diogenes of Babylon, who according to Apollonius Dyscolus, divide the article between ἄρθρον ἀόριστον ‘article’ and ἄρθρον ὡρισμένον ‘demonstrative pronoun’. Finally, the Alexandrians, of whom we will not take care in this work for lack of space, introduce the term ἀντωνυμία ‘pronoun’ and divide the article between ἄρθρον προτακτικόν (οr προτασσόμενον) ‘prepositive article’ (our definite article) and ἄρθρον ὑποτακτικόν (or ὑποτασσόμενον) ‘postpositive article’ (our relative pronoun).
