Abstract

This qualitative study with a phenomenological focus is part of the research on bereavement in self-narratives. It focuses on research into the construction of the continuing bonds maintained by those who lose their loved ones. We present the case of a mother who lost her eldest daughter who, in addition to being supported in her faith, is supported by the connections she establishes with her deceased daughter by performing new rituals mediated by signs and messages. These rituals allow her to reconstruct her narrative and help her to remain connected to her deceased daughter and to progress in her grieving process. The continuing bonds therefore acts as a framework that complements the grieving process. The understanding of the continuity of bonds has transformed research and practice by complementing grief. As such, continuity of bonds can involve holding on to the memory of the deceased through the comfort of feeling their presence. We analyse Candelaria's narrative process and how through it, she connects, appropriates and gives meaning to the personal meanings of her new relationship with her deceased daughter, which she rebuilds and reinforces within the family and cultural group to which she belongs.
