Abstract

New data on the geomechanical properties of the highly cohesive volcanic rocks of the Canary Archipelago are provided in this work. There were carried out geomechanical tests such as estimations of P and S waves velocity propagation, estimation of the apparent Specific weigh, Uniaxial Compressive Strength, compressive strength deduced from the hammer rebound index, Tensile Strength, Point Load Test, Strain Modules and some relevant correlations between different studied properties. Based on uniaxial and triaxial compressive tests, as well as on the estimations of the geological strength index (GSI) and textural features, estimations of the rock mass parameters such as tensile strength, uniaxial compressive strength and modulus of deformation were calculated for selected lithotypes. The equivalent Mohr-Coulomb fit such as cohesion and friction angle are also estimated. On the basis of the textural features and petrologic types a preliminary classification of rocks, grouped into different lithotypes, was made. This classification includes different types of basalts, trachybasalts, trachytes, phonolites and ignimbrites.
