Abstract

Introduction: the life expectancy of the population has been increased due to factors such as: hygienic- sanitary improvements, technological advances, the existence of a greater number of medicines and a long etcetera. This increase leads to a greater number of concomitant chronic diseases, which require complex prescription of medications. Polypharmacy leads to the appearance of problems related to medicines, making the role of the pharmacist in the health system increasingly important. Objectives: to improve the quality of life of the polymedicated patient through healthcare services in the community pharmacy and to cooperate with other health professionals to detect and reduce drug-related problems. Material and methods: the sample used to carry out this work were all those who agreed to take part in the study at the pharmacy office. To be part of the study, it was necessary to be a polymedicated patient, with problems related to medications or poor therapeutic adherence. Results: 16 patients were interviewed, of which 31.25% were men and the rest were women. The average number of medications prescribed was 9.31. After the first interview, it was observed that 10 of the 16 patients did not know a drug or more than those prescribed in their treatment plan. Conclusions: it is necessary to promote the use of these services in the community pharmacy, since they improve the quality of life. The proximity between the pharmacist and the patient enables drug-related problems to be detected quickly and efficiently.
