Morphology and nitrogen concentration were measured in seven Aleppo pine seedling sets and afterwards planted in two different sites: an agricultural land and a harsh non-agricultural land. Growth was higher in the agricultural land for every set. However, mortality was higher in the agricultural land due to herbaceous competence. A good relationship was found between nitrogen content before planting and field growth, stronger in the non-agricultural land. The set with the smallest seedlings had the poorest growth in both plots and the highest mortality in the agricultural land. This result points out the importance of planting big and well-fertilized seedlings in sites where herbaceous competence is a problem, in order to reduce costs associated to weed control.
