Resumo

Introduction: The proper knowledge of a given medication and the treatment compliance are two essential factors that should be present in order to obtain an optimum pharmacological treatment. Objectives: The main objectives of this study are to evaluate how pharmacist’s intervention can influence the knowledge and treatment compliance of diabetic type 2 patients and analyze the possible association that may exist between the two variables. Methodology: A prospective observational study, without a control group and consecutive sampling method was carried out at two community pharmacies. Both male and female 40 years and older diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus and treated with A10B oral antidiabetic medication were considered as part of the study population. Result and discussion: At the initial visit, the 21 patients that were part of the study showed a good understanding of the following: medical indications, dosage, general guide lines, duration of the treatment, how to administer the medication, its effectiveness, and how to store the medication. On the other hand they showed a low level of knowledge regarding to drugs precautions, side effects, contraindications and interactions. The pharmacist’s intervention could produce a 57.1% increase in the percentage of knowledge that the patients had regarding their medication in contrast to the initial findings (p<0.0003, McNemar mid-p). The rate of treatment non-compliance showed a reduction of 23.8% in contrast to initial visit. The treatment non-compliance was mainly due to the patient forgetting to take the medication, the negative side effects arising, or the distrust of patients in their medication. Conclusion: The pharmaceutical intervention is able to improve the medication knowledge and treatment compliance of patience with type 2 diabetes. There has been found no association between the two variables.
