Zusammenfassung

This article will analyse the emergence of a new global economic crisis driven by the COVID-19 pandemic and affecting museums. It highlights the impact of the crisis and the changes in management and communication strategies devised by museums to safeguard the international visibility and projection of their collections and exhibitions. A new framework for the conceptual review of museums and museology as a scientific discipline challenges the role of these cultural institutions and their functions, and that draw the visitor’s gaze, show visitors new ways of seeing, serve the museum and society as a whole, generate impact and social and economic returns.
