Abstract

During the last two decades the research about these archaeological rock sites has undergone an exponential growth in Canary Islands becoming one of the most important cultural elements of the archaeological heritage of the archipelago. The archaeological maps of the islands have shown their variability across the territory, allowing to confirm their introduction in the different cultural indigenous areas and creating an expected debate about their origins and meaning. This paper deals with the process of their introduction in the archaeological field of the Canary Islands, as well as the different thesis and debates until now. Whereas the most accepted interpretation relates this archaeological sites to places of worship where ceremonies and propitiatory fertility.
