Zusammenfassung

A substantial number of children are affected by a psychiatric illness. Then, understanding child psychopharmacology often is an important part of the practice of a paediatrician. Research provides strong support for the efficacy and effectiveness of pharmacological treatment for some childhood mental disorders. However, there was consensus about the need to demonstrate efficacy in targeted disorders as well as symptoms within specific disorders. Some of the most utilized treatments in child psychiatry are stimulants, antipsychotics, mood regulators and antidepressants. Although use of these medications in children has increased, mechanisms of action remain poorly understood and benefit risk ratio during long-term treatment remains to be determined. This current article develops the main basis about psychopharmacology in childhood and recent advances in medication therapy of the pediatric population.
